Hello!
Apparently I created this blog years ago. But then never posted in it. But now I have accountability in that if you DON'T get a post notification by 6pm on Mondays (of course that means you will have to subscribe...) or a text from me about said post being posted you have permission to pester me. Pester gently, please 😂
So. This will be somewhat of a introduction post (the whys and whats and all that jazz) and the first actual official like Bible study post will go live tomorrow. I promise.
A few things you should know:
1) I like words. And the meaning of words. English, in general, is an absolutely terrible language. Just ask anyone who has ever learned it after learning another one. Why are read and reed pronounced the same, but also read and red? No clue. But they are. What makes Bible study in English fun is that the Bible wasn't actually written in English (gasp). In fact, English, as we speak it today, wasn't even a language at all until somewhere around 1500 years after the Bible was written. And the languages the Bible was written in differ drastically from English in some very specific ways. There are words and phrases written in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin (the original Bible languages) that don't have direct translations in English. Or have multiple ways they could be translated. Or the English word just doesn't have the same fullness of meaning. But anyway...
2) There is a reason why the blog is called Ramblings. As you may be able to tell, brevity is not necessarily my strong suit when it comes to writing. Probably a consequence of 15 page papers on questions that could have been answered in only 5. But I digress (again).
The definition of rambling is:
adjective: aimlessly wandering. taking an irregular course; straggling. spread out irregularly in various directions. straying from one subject to another; desultory
And you may be asking, "ok I know what most of those words mean, but what is desultory?" If you are, don't worry, I asked the same question (and will answer it in a minute). If you aren't...well then you're just smarter than me and can skip the next sentence.
desultory: (adjective): lacking in consistency, constancy, or visible order, disconnected; fitful. digressing from or unconnected with the main subject; random.
Back to the original point of "why is the blog called Ramblings?". Well, if "straying from one subject to another," "lacking in visible order," "digressing from or unconnected with the main subject," and "random" don't perfectly describe my writing style...I don't know what does. Would desultory have been a better word to use? Probably. But also I didn't know what it meant before I named the blog and it would have just created more questions.
3) And finally, why is the url "lamponastand"? In Matthew 4:21, Jesus says: “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a large bowl or a bed? Don’t you put it on its stand?" In other words, "this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." In a world where darkness is so easy to find, I seek to take my light, though it may not always shine the brightest, and bring it out where it can be found.
Well there you have it. I was going to do a whole study series on the names of God (which I would have just taken from an actual Bible study I have, definitely not just my own words) but I'm not sure that quite fits with the random theme. So this will be a bit of an adventure for all of us, if you have a question you would like answered or a theme you want to go over or just want to know my opinion about something, I think there is some way of sending a message or commenting or...something? Or I would imagine the people who read this will also have other ways of communicating with me. And if you stumble upon this page and don't have another way of contacting me and would like one...I can figure that out too. The internet is quite the amazing place lol.
I also promised a song attached to each post. Though tempted to find the most annoying kids version of "This Little Light of Mine"...I think this one is better.
